Winn Dixie

Last Friday our class took a walking field trip to the Winn Dixie on Roosevelt Boulevard near our school. Everyone at Winn Dixie was wonderful to our students. Each student had 2 items to look for in the store. The first stop was the produce department where the students were given a tour. The produce manager showed the class many different fruits and vegetables. Each student was given a pumpkin and a banana to take back to school. Next, we went to the bakery department. The students decorated a "cookie monster" with different colored icings. Then, we walked through the store looking for more items on our lists. After all of the items were found, it was time to go. What a fantastic tour!

October's Book of the Month

The book of the month for October is COOK-A-DOODLE-DOO. It is about a rooster who wants to prepare something new to eat. He finds a recipe book from the Little Red Hen. The students were able to make connections from this story to the story of Little Red Hen.. Each student illustrated the beginning, middle and end of COOK-A-DOODLE-DOO on a story map. Students worked with a partner to write a retelling of the story based on the story map.

Little Red Hen

Our class has been working on a unit about the farm. The students participated in many activities to develop their farm vocabulary. Some students built a farm community, others used puppets to retell farm stories. One of the favorite stories of the unit was The Little Red Hen. As a culminating activity to our farm unit the class made bread and homemade butter. We loved kneading the dough!
